dan shake is on a one-man mission to keep the party vibrant and interesting without losing that all-important impulse to move. his buy on sight shake label fires up once more with two fine-tuned heaters that have the peak of the night in their sights and a shot of pure disco coursing through their veins. -freak- takes its cues from 80s electronic disco embellished with a little acid magic and some serious heft in the production department to create a strutting, sassy party monster. -can t take it- finds shake in filter sweeping sample mode, taking a massive disco sample and strapping it to a rowdy, fist-pumping house undercarriage. this record is set to be huge this summer, no doubt about it.

it’s not often that a breakthrough producer manages to cause major hype after just one release but when that artist is from the uk, putting out a brilliant ep on moodymann’s mahogani music, you start to realize how it happened in dan shake’s case. now its time for dan to build on this incredible start and from the way things are looking it’s safe to say it’s all going in the right direction. another rising star from the uk is wolf music regular medlar who has been making serious waves the last 5 years. remixes for the likes of glenn astro and disclosure have all helped put him in the spotlight and his debut lp sleep from 2013 delivered in spades. so when the news that these two were joining forces for a collaborative project reached us here at d.o.g we wanted in on the action.

here at black acre, we are extremely excited about starting 2015 with a bang - a 12” from new sensation on the circuit, dan shake. he is the first artist outside of detroit to cut his teeth on moodymann’s mahogani music, winning plaudits here and across the atlantic for his catchy groove laden “3am jazz club- ep. now with much anticipation, the tony allen & fela kuti acolyte returns with two crunchy dilla-eque takes on soulful club music. * out of sight is a carefully constructed dance floor number packed with low-end theory and seductive vocal stabs. low-slung fuzzy bass swinging perfectly between ghost-horns and driving drums. traders ii, a collaboration with canadian based rennie foster, see’s dan’s dna marker driving kicks smashing acid atoms against a sharp live horn section bringing the ethereal jazz cat to the dance.

rising concern dan shake has achieved what no other has in over a decade: with his debut release in the music world, he has become the very first producer without a detroit heritage or residency to land a release on moodymanns prestigious record label mahogani music. based in london, the former leeds student secured the feat in a charmingly anachronistic fashion: having just watched kenny dixon jr perform alongside the 3 chairs at dimensions festival, dan simply handed over a demo cd with a collection of unreleased tracks. moodymann was hooked almost instantantly, taking the first plunge on welcoming an outsider into his tight-knit crew of detroit strong artists. citing influence from the layered percussive rhythms of afrobeat pioneers such as tony allen and fela kuti, the soul-drenched sampling of j dilla and the kind of dark, dense grooves laid out by contemporary producers such as flying lotus and motor city drum ensemble, dans situation in winding up on a label renowned for encompassing all those traits is obviously a blessing for the young producer.
